Parenting can be the most rewarding and fulfilling experience of our lives. It can also be full of challenges. Having a child with special needs is an experience that not everyone can understand or appreciate. We can feel isolated, exhausted, and depressed. If we have other children, we worry about the impact on them. We must spend a great deal of time advocating for our child. Our relationships may suffer.
Counseling can help with:
- feeling understood and supported
- getting access to information and resouces
- navigating the systems
- advocating within the systems
- creating a support network
- practicing self care and reducing stress
Insurance will often pay for counseling. It also can be a very worthwhile personal investment.
Play therapy for children is also available. Play therapy can provide a child with the opportunity to express and work through their emotions with a trained professional to guide them. The 1:1 relationship in play therapy provides a unique opportunity for the child to increase self esteem and validate their experience.
