There is a shortage of mental health professionals available to serve the unique population of older adults. However, it is a much needed service. Geriatric mental health services can include assessment and diagnosis of mental health conditions such as mental status or behavioral changes, depression assessment, and cognitive screening. Many older adults are reluctant to obtain mental health treatment. In fact, only 50% of older adults who have mental health issues receive any type of treatment. Of those 50%, half of them receive treatment from their primary doctor (not a mental health professional).
Some issues addressed in mental health assessment and treatment:
dementia, substance abuse, anxiety, depression, grief and loss, chronic mental illness such as bipolar or schizophrenia
